In the 1850s, the future of American slavery seemed bright

Historians and academicians have theorised that the rapid industrialisation and spread of liberal bourgeois values meant that by the mid-19th century, slavery as a concept faced certain extinction. But, Matthew Karp writing in Aeon Magazine tells us that the star of slavery was in fact shining very brightly in that period and was extinguished due to very specific events.
